State Emergency Service Ground Search volunteers
State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers assist South Australia Police (SA Police) in conducting land searches for missing people in all types of terrain in both rural and urban areas.
Search teams usually consist of six to eight members who work under the direction of a land search team leader. Volunteers also assist SA Police at crime scenes or when searching for evidence.
Volunteers are trained in first aid, radio communications, map reading and navigation and search techniques for use during both day and night.
Depending on the area to be searched, teams work in conjunction with search dogs, bike teams, horses, motorbikes and utility terrain vehicles (UTV).
SES is called upon to assist SA Police regularly for search activities, therefore all SES units provide search training and opportunities. A reasonable level of fitness is required to undertake land search operations.
